My son is wondering why my wife and I go out every day. I told him we go to work. He asked, “what happens if we don’t go to work?”

I told him we can not make money to pay his fees and other bills. He was surprised we get paid when we will work. Unfortunately, boy, that’s how life works. No one gets rewarded for sitting idle. He asked, “can’t we stay off work and play with the children?” I wish I could do more of this, it’s refreshing staying with kids and responding to all the innocent ‘silly' questions.

I wish adult life is this simple: wake up, play, eat, sleep, rinse, and repeat. However, work is key! We work so we can have time to play with family when appropriate. What makes life interesting is our ability to go to work and play when we need to.

Sometimes, I want to feel guilty for not having more time for my children, but my consolation is that we can only make a happy family by prioritizing; do the right thing at the right time. Combining family and work is an arduous task and anyone with that responsibility needs to appreciate themselves once in a while. Don’t wait for anyone to appreciate you.

As a child, I wished my parents stayed home and played with me, but I understand better now. It’s all about balance!
